A sixteen-panel mosaic running from the Rho Ophiuchi clouds on the left toward the star fields of the inner galaxy on the right. The yellow glow around Antares comes from a cool old star lighting the dust wrapped around it; the blue nearby is the same kind of dust lit by a much hotter neighbour. Between them, lanes of cold dust trail off to the lower right, blocking whatever sits behind. Those clouds are roughly 400 light-years away, close enough to be considered local. The bright, grainy clouds on the right are thousands of light-years further in, toward the centre of the galaxy, and the dark gaps cutting through them are more dust rather than empty space.
